This is great!  I’m so happy for the EU animals. Hopefully, this will lead to a more vegan diet for many people, now that they realize that these animals are sentient beings.

Many Eastern faiths have recognized all animals and creatures as Sentient Beings for millenniums.

She has some serious issues!
Any one who harms animals usually has some other underlining issues that would be a danger and menace to society.  They  typically end up in prison for murder or some other serious federal offense.  So, to those people that may have a no care attitude about life just because she tortured and killed a kitten, you need to think again.  What would happen if her friend was home?

Teen Kills Kitten in Oven: Faces 10-Year Sentence

On June 3, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old resident of the Bronx, for allegedly killing a two-month-old kitten by burning her to death in an oven. In addition to cruelty to animals, Cherry was charged with multiple counts of burglary, arson and criminal mischief. Under New York State law, Cherry is considered an adult and faces more than 10 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Cherry admits that she broke into the home of an ex-roommate on May 6 with the intent to “play a joke and mess up her apartment.” Cherry and an accomplice allegedly threw bleach on the walls of the apartment, slashed furniture and stole various items. Before leaving, the pair put the victim’s kitten, Tiger Lily, into the hot oven.

It’s amazing how many people don’t want to know where their food is coming from!  I sure want to know, I look on every package to see if it’s made in America or China.  Not to long ago our animals were being poisoned by food coming from China.

Let’s not forget about the other animals that people think come from the grocery store.  These animals are tortured and brutalized before coming to your table.

The HSUS doesn’t have the luxury of focusing exclusively on any one issue. We put a stake in the ground on most of the major forms of widespread or institutionalized cruelty—in the U.S. and increasingly abroad.

Since its beginnings in the 1950s, The HSUS has always taken aim at farm animal abuses. The only difference now is our sense of urgency, since confinement, transport, and slaughter systems have become needlessly harsh and because the number of animals raised for food is so staggeringly large.

If the howls from leaders within the big agribusiness sector are solid indicators, we are making some meaningful progress. And never more so than in 2008, when we broke our Hallmark/Westland slaughter plant investigation and also led the charge to pass Proposition 2 in California.

Last week, Wendy’s agreed to start purchasing a modest but meaningful portion of eggs from cage-free producers. And this morning, one of our staff members spoke at a McDonald’s shareholder meeting urging the company to align itself with other fast-food giants and begin to phase in the use of cage-free eggs at its American outlets, or even to mirror its action in Europe, where McDonald’s has already agreed to switch to 100 percent cage-free whole eggs by next year.  [read more]

Felony cruelty trial ordered in kitten stomping

An Orcutt man is facing a felony animal cruelty trial for allegedly stomping to death three kittens.

Superior Court Judge Jed Beebe in Santa Maria ruled Wednesday that there was enough evidence to try David Harold Pierce on the felony counts. He will be arraigned May 6.

Pierce was arrested April 13 after witnesses spotted him stomping the kittens in a Santa Maria grocery store parking lot.

Cheryl Mouyeos testified Pierce dropped three kittens out of a plastic bag and begin to stomp them in the parking lot at Spencer’s Fresh Markets.

When asked why he didn’t leave them at an animal shelter, Pierce allegedly told the woman, “I called the pound but they wouldn’t pick them up. I don’t like cats.”

Funny how some people complain about “vermin” taking over there yard, but human encroachment of land is the worst thing that can happen to a species that can cause extinction. Who’s the worst vermin you know?

It’s like that lady complaining about the bears crossing her yard to get food, when her home is in the original path of the bears original habitat!

Lynx critical habitat increases

The amount of land designated as critical habitat for the Canada lynx, a cat federally classified as a threatened species, will increase more than 20-fold under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decision announced Tuesday.

The designation will apply to about 39,000 square miles in six states, up from a total of 1,841 square miles in three, the agency said. Lands in Maine, Idaho and Wyoming are being added to the critical-habitat map that was adopted in 2006 and consisted only of some national parklands in Minnesota, Montana and Washington. The amount of land designated in those states will expand.

The habitat reconsideration, influenced by a court ruling, followed allegations that Deputy Assistant Interior Secretary Julie MacDonald interfered with some decisions by the Fish and Wildlife Service. MacDonald resigned in 2007 after the Interior Department’s inspector general concluded she pressured federal scientists to alter findings on certain matters before the agency.

“This (lynx habitat) was one that we decided she may have inappropriately influenced,” Shawn Sartorius, the Fish and Wildlife Service’s lead lynx biologist, said Tuesday from his Helena office.

Sartorius, who said he knows of no terrestrial critical-habitat designation larger than the 39,000-square-mile plan, added that not all the same people were involved in the lynx decisions of 2006 and Tuesday. That two such widely different outcomes were reached may not be attributable entirely to MacDonald’s involvement or lack of it, he said.

Critical habitat identifies places with features essential for conservation of threatened or endangered species. For lynx, it includes forests with features such as woody debris for denning; habitat for the snowshoe hare, on which lynx prey; and extended periods of deep, fluffy snow, through which lynx move with relative ease.

The critical-habitat designation applies to about 10,000 square miles in northwestern Montana and a small portion of northeastern Idaho, and about 9,500 square miles in Yellowstone National Park and surrounding areas in Montana and Wyoming. The designated lands in Maine total about 9,500 square miles, followed by Minnesota with about 8,000 and Washington with roughly 1,800. Some of the land is public and some private. [read more]

Fish and Wildlife was forced to admit that Bush administration political appointees like disgraced former Interior official Julie MacDonald had tampered with the science behind the paltry lynx designation. The Center is currently challenging dozens of other unjust Bush administration species listings and critical habitat decisions stemming from improper influence by political appointees.
